As of 2012, only two captains of Stanley Cup winning teams were born and trained in Europe. The first came in 2008, courtesy of Swede Nick Lidstrom leading the Red Wings over the Penguins in six games. This was followed in 2011 by Bruins captain and Slovak giant Zdeno Chara, who was also the first Stanley Cup champion captain born inside the Iron Curtain. The first European captain to lead a team to the Finals was Swedish Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson in 2007.
